Tips For Maintaining Your Drainfield

If you have a drain field that you use to leech out the excess liquid from your septic system, you likely depend on it to make sure that you are able to continue using your septic system safely. This means that you want it to continue to work without too much effort on your end. However, a little bit of work spent on maintenance is going to be far less work than it would require to replace or redo a drain field. Here are some tips for maintaining your drain field so that it continues to work for you as effectively as possible.

1. Conserve Water

Drain fields do not have an unlimited capacity. At some point, the drain field is going to be saturated with water, and you are going to have spurts of liquid from the septic system pooling in the middle of your lawn. This is going to smell bad and destabilize the ground. In order to make sure that you do not have to do some sort of emergency drying out phase, you will need to monitor the amount of water that you are using for washing dishes, taking showers, and washing clothing. You will need to be especially careful when there has been heavy rainfall recently due to the fact that the rainfall is going to significantly decrease the amount of liquid that your drain field will be able to absorb and disperse.

2. Plant Grass

You will also want to cover your drain field with some sort of plant in order to avoid having the soil erode and to increase the amount of water dispersion that the drain field is capable of. The best plants to use to cover the drain field include the different varieties of grasses due to the fact that they have extensive root systems that will be able to absorb a lot of the water and carry it further away from the drain field, as well as increase the overall solidification of the soil that will directly confront erosion.

3. Check for Broken Pipes

Finally, be sure that you are constantly on the lookout for small pools of water on top of your drain field. This could be a sign of a busted pipe, which would result in you having to take corrective action to repair it. Making small repairs will be far less expensive than having to rejuvenate your entire drain field.
